Introduction
ISD (Information Services Department) is the department inside the county government in charge of building all the internal applications and websites for the whole county, their mission is to unify all the departments under a single system, where they share their internal services and resources.
The Problem(s)
“Building the Boat While Sailing”
ISD is a very valuable department for the County, yet the outdated UI of their applications and websites do not reflect the service the county offers its county residents. Every department in the county ( firefighters, museums, child services, etc. ) needed to have a cohesive design. Also, most of their websites are using a core version of WordPress with custom plugins made at the county, so the new design system had to build for WordPress Gutenberg blocks.
The focus is on the core functionality of sending and requesting money. The app’s UI places a great deal of emphasis on the social networking aspect. Its hidden navigation makes many important features hard to find. When starting this project, I hypothesized that users do not see value in the social networking aspect of the application. I speculated that users care most about the financial functionality associated with sending and requesting funds.
My Design Process
- – Gathering and evaluating user requirements, in collaboration with project managers and engineers.
- – Designing graphic user interface elements, like menus, tabs, blocks, fully responsive sites, widgets, etc.
- – Develop UI mockups and prototypes that clearly illustrate how sites function and look.
- – Designing user experiences from low-fidelity sketches to clickable web-based prototypes and hi-fidelity pixel-perfect mockups.
